Some of my most vivid memories are being in the kitchen with my grandmother, Nanny, as all us kids called her. I loved to watch her cook. I loved the smells that wafted through the house filling my nostrils with delight and my heart with warmth.
Christmas was a special time in the kitchen with Nanny. I helped her bake her special date cookies and stir up my favorite Christmas candy, Coconut Balls. The coconut balls took all day to make but they were worth it. No microwaves back then. We melted the chocolate with some paraffin in a double boiler on the stove. Together we rolled the coconut mixture into balls and dipped them in chocolate. When it got too soft it went back into the freezer until it was hard enough to roll again. The end result was a sweet treat you can't buy in any store. It was made even better by the time I shared with my Nanny and the delight I got from helping to create the delicious treat for Christmas. To this day when I enjoy a coconut ball, the memories of my time in the kitchen with Nanny come flooding back.
The special time I spent making Christmas goodies with my Nanny is a precious memory. It makes the recipes special to me. Family recipes to be passed down to new generations. . They are not just recipes, they are memories.
